There will be no entry fee for freelance journalists this year. There will, however, be a discount of 50% for Publisher Support Services (PSS) members, reducing the cost of entry to R80.

The Sikuvile Journalism Awards are the premier awards for journalism in the country and aim to reward journalists for excellence in journalism in 14 categories. The awards also strive to recognise the South African Story of the Year, Journalist of the Year, Upcoming/Rising Star of the Year and the Lifetime Achiever Award — the Allan Kirkland Soga Achievement Award.

2020 will also see the bursary for mid-career journalists awarded. The goal of the category is to empower mid-career journalists and editorial executives with at least five years’ experience who show the potential to become future newsroom leaders. The prize is a fully paid month training at an international journalism school or training institution. All expenses will also be paid, such as flights and accommodation.

The PSS says it would like to thank Standard Bank for its continued sponsorship of the awards, especially in these difficult times. According to PSS, sponsorship not only makes the awards possible but allows for all the winners to receive R15 000, a trophy and a certi?cate.

This year's theme, 'The Naked Truth' is about "plain unadorned facts, without concealment or embellishment. Stripped to its essence".

The team at PSS concludes, "COVID-19 has shown just how important the truth and the facts are as the world struggles to distinguish between fact and fiction, conspiracy theories abounding and fake news about the virus."
