Staying connected has never been as important as it is now. If you don’t take care of the relationships you have built as a PR pro over time, all that hard work might not pay off.

It is therefore important to take into consideration that a big part of the job is to stay in touch with the right people, as this will ensure that your reputation remains intact.

Here are three reasons why you need to keep building your relationships:

1. If you’re out of sight, you’re out of mind

Many people are working remotely and, as a result, their routines have changed. This means that your usual clients, media contacts and colleagues might not have you in the back of their mind like they normally would, as face-to-face contact has become minimal.

Now is a great time to check in with these contacts, perhaps once a week or so, just to ensure you stay visible, in case they need a press release, a webinar hosted or simply just some advice.

Being out of sight will lead to being out of mind unless you make an effort of it to stay relevant within their space.

2. You can identify new opportunities

Everything has changed across the world, and people are still trying to adapt to the ‘new normal’. This means that people are uncertain of what the future of every industry holds, and staying connected with media contacts and clients might just open up a few doors to great new opportunities that weren’t there before.

Staying connected with the right people will also allow for doors to open to new clients, allowing your business to grow, which is what every PR professional strives for!

3. Exposure

Everyone is extremely active on social media at the moment, and this is a great way to show clients what a brand or company is up to.

If you stay connected with your clients and media connections, there is a great chance that they may mention you on social media or even contact you for more opportunities. For example, they could ask you to do a Q&A with them or mention you in a post promoting your great service.

You need to ensure that your connections have good reputations though, because if they mention you on social media, people will associate you with them. And you should always focus on having a great reputation, especially in the PR industry.
