The popular Cape Town radio personality, known for his wicked sense of humour, received the good news in a rather unusual way – via Johannesburg-based colleague Darren 'Whackhead' Simpson, who knew that O’Connor was anxiously waiting to hear from the
Power Couple producers after his make-or-break audition. In a prank call, Whackhead pretended to be a powerful M-Net executive who had to decide whether O’Connor would be committed to fulfilling the channel's particularly difficult requirements for this unique show. While he was willing to get into shape with series of impossible diets, he couldn't stomach the request to gobble down a bullfrog with the contestants.
Luckily, M-Net CEO for South Africa, Yolisa Phahle then stepped in to end his misery. "You got the gig," she said. "We're absolutely thrilled to welcome you to the M-Net family. We wanted a new face for this big new show and we know that some of the best television presenters come from radio."
The prank was aired on both
947 and
KFM. To hear it visit

According to M-Net's head of Publicity, Lani Lombard, the
Power Couple producers were looking for a presenter with great people skills to whom both the contestants and viewers at home could relate. "As the show is all about love and taking risks, the contestants are bound to go on a roller-coaster ride of emotions and Ryan is the perfect person to guide them through this incredible journey. He's a natural who has proved on radio that he has the ability to handle difficult situations and his wit, warm personality and amazing energy will set the scene for this fantastic, feel-good show."
Power Couple will be broadcast on M-Net, channel 101 on DStv from August 2015.
