How and when did you get into music?I started singing at a very young age, but I started pursuing the whole music career later in life when I was a student at the Durban University of Technology. I used to hang out with a lot of up-and-coming musicians and I ended up writing and recording songs which were used and, to some extent, compiled by some of Durban’s finest DJ’s. The most popular song which I did, and which was received well in the music space was
Fly Away With Me which was on DJ Bongz’ album,
Sophomore.
How would you describe your sound? My sound is a mixture of Afro-Pop and Afro-Soul, with some influences from house music. The idea is not to box myself only into one music genre.
Who have been your biggest musical influences?
Okay, the number one musician who influenced my career is definitely Brenda Fassie, her presence, her voice and for being unapologetic for who and what she was really stood out for me. Afrotraction is also one of my favourites. I think he is able to put the soul into Afro-Soul so flawlessly. The very last group that has also influenced my musical journey would be Mafikizolo. They are the masters of performance and overall presentation when it comes to being on stage.
Who would you like to work with in the future?Afrotraction and Vusi Nova. I think they complement my style of music.
What was your favourite part about filming the video for #UngenzaNje?Seeing what I had envisioned when I wrote the song come to life was undoubtedly the best feeling ever. The three different scenes which we used complemented the production and the overall essence of the song. I think people will get to understand the song and what I’m talking about more when they see the video (and my co-star, of course).
What’s your advice for aspiring South African artists?Pray, and trust God’s timing. Believe in your music. Don’t compromise on quality. Persevere through all the difficulties that come your way on the journey to achieving your dreams.
What can we expect from you in the future?
You can expect more music, more singles, collaborations and performances all around the country. I am not only a musician, but an all-round entertainer, you might find me on a theatre production soon, as well as composing music for other South African artists.
