Sodastream, the innovative company that makes home carbonation sexy, worked its magic on an impressive 37-member jury of design experts with its Source machine, to receive the Red Dot Award: product design 2013 at a prestigious event on Tuesday, 2 July.
The “red dot” is a coveted recognition for high design quality. The international jury, which included famous shoe designer, Jimmy Choo among others – only awards this sought-after seal of quality to products that set themselves apart significantly from comparable products because of excellent design, thought-out innovations and ground-breaking trends.
4662 entries from 54 different countries and in 19 different categories were received in 2013 and the Sodastream Source was named a 2013 winner of the prestigious red dot design award within the product design category.
Designing the Source was a collaborative process between Sodastream, the world’s number one maker of home carbonation systems and Yves Béhar and his team at fuseproject, a leading international design firm with a reputation for sustainable design.
The Sodastream Source was painstakingly developed to result in simplified aesthetics and functionality. Béhar ensured the sleek, minimalist design made the user experience as intuitive as possible - from the Snap-Lock mechanism and the refined mechanics making the entire top surface responsive to touch, to the LED display providing instant feedback on carbonation. Powered by a CO2 canister and featuring high gloss surfaces, brushed aluminium and polished stainless steel details, the machine has an all-over refined feel.
Using water direct from the tap, the Sodastream Source instantly creates sparkling water, and carbonated flavored beverages, which results in less plastic manufactured, less plastic waste and less transportation of bottled beverages. Even the carbonators that power the soda maker are reusable. When empty, they can be returned to agents to be refilled.
“When creating the Source we knew that world-class design was necessary to secure space in the modern kitchen,” said Yaron Kopel, chief innovation and design officer at Sodastream. “That’s why we chose to work with Yves Behar, a one of a kind designer who shares our philosophy of sustainability and was able to make our vision of a one-of-a-kind appliance a reality. We are proud that this has been recognised by a distinguished panel of design judges with an iconic Red Dot Award.”
