Magtag! ... a night dedicated to the sound of Afrikaans laughter. Top comedy producers, Whacked, feel that Afrikaans humour is unique in the world, and should be celebrated.
“Comedy has been going through a real boom in South Africa over the last few years, with bigger and more spectacular shows being staged – but almost all of them have favoured English. We thought we should put together something that really celebrates Afrikaans, as it is a unique language, and some of the greatest Afrikaans comedy writing just can’t be translated into any other language, without losing it’s real magic,” says Marita Van Schalkwyk, creative director on this Whacked production. “We can’t wait for these two nights, where thousands of Afrikaans speaking people can get together and enjoy a spectacular show that celebrates and acknowledges the sheer hilarity of local comedy.”
“With the migration of content away from the traditional formats such as ‘Spies en Plesier’ and the amazing sketch work by artists such as Casper De Vries, we have seen the rise of amazing younger comedians who now define the Afrikaans comedy world across new platforms, not just on stage and screen but increasingly online. We want to stage an event that will capture this magic.”
kykNET is partnering with Whacked to produce a television special around this event, as tickets are limited, and not everyone will be able to attend. It is also history in the making as this is the first time Afrikaans stand-up comedy will be featured on the channel.
Jacaranda FM are also behind the initiative, as they know that it is time that someone staged a huge and exciting night of Afrikaans comedy.
The producers promise that this will be more than just a show, with the experience starting in the foyer, with products on display, surprises around every corner, and then flowing into the arena. There will also be chances to win exclusive backstage passes to the VIP lounge.
Magtag! will be on at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena from Friday, 24 to Saturday, 25 June. Tickets can be booked through Computicket,
