16 parent and child teams from across Pretoria came together to create and compete for the Best Decorated Cookie and Best Burger titles and prizes. The teams were made up of mom-and-son/daughter and father-and-son/daughter combinations, who went all out to win the top prizes in each category.

Each parent-child team was given the challenge of baking and decorating cookies, as well as making burgers. To add a unique twist to their creations, they were also given the opportunity to include their favourite Spur Sauce as an ingredient.

Hosted at the KeTala Chef’s Academy, the event kicked off with baking and decorating cookies. Each team was judged on their ability to work together and how creatively they decorated their cookies. Mom-and-daughter team, Laura Le Roux and Kiara (12), and mom-and-son team, Estelle Janse van Rensburg and Justin (7), walked away with the top spots in that category.

The Best Burger challenge focused on working together, the taste of the burger patty and how it was cooked, as well as ingredients used as toppings. The Best Burger prize went to Mpho Masilela and her son, Mthokozisi (10), who apart from cooking the patty to perfection, used a delicious combination of sauces and toppings to make their burger stand out from the rest. Prudence Swaratlhe and her daughter, Khanyisile (7) came a close second.

“It was really difficult to choose the winners. All the teams worked so well together, reminding us how important it is for families to spend time together, cook together and eat together,” says Joe Stead, creative director from Spur Steak Ranches. “Thank you also to Rhodes Quality, DStv and PrimaToys who partnered with us to bring parents and kids together in the kitchen”.
