Mhlongo's coverage will be showcased in a show titled United States of Somizi, which will air at a later date on the channel.

Vice president for BET, Youth, and Music, Monde Twala, says, "MTV Africa is exhilarated to be travelling to Los Angeles with the multi-talented Somizi Mhlongo, where he is set to host the red carpet for our African audiences on Sunday, 27 August."

"MTV Video Music Awards is one of the biggest music events in the world and Somizi is renowned for his choreography and contribution in the music scene. Viewers must tune in for a magical night of great music entertainment," adds Twala.

Smirnoff's marketing manager, Kyle Lesch says, "Music and MTV have always broken barriers and, with Smirnoff bringing the broadcast of the VMAs to South Africa, ‘Everyone’s Invited’ to enjoy this historic transformation to the Awards that have been honouring the best music videos since 1984."

Lesch adds, "MTV’s move to non-gendered categories aligns with Smirnoff’s 'Equalizing Music' initiative, which aims to drive gender parity and diversity in the music industry. What’s more, the addition of the new category compliments Smirnoff’s efforts in shining a light on creatives who use their platforms to address social issues through their newly launched 'Change Makers' campaign, which aims to encourage everyone to make a positive change."

Participants can vote for their favourites across eight VMA categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration, and more by visiting the MTV website.

Additionally, voting for the Best New Artist award, presented by Taco Bell®, will remain live through the 2017 MTV VMAs pre-show airing on MTV (DStv channel 130) on Monday, 28 August at 01:00 CAT with a repeat at 20:30 CAT.

The top two artists will be revealed during the pre-show, starting off with a live Twitter hashtag vote, with the winner being announced during the live main telecast. Nominees for the socially voted category, Best Song of Summer, will be announced at a later date.
