Thaning gained acclaim as the guest star in a television show for the United States where he portrayed an adrenaline obsessed Australian millionaire. He has since moved to Johannesburg and played the role of Dr Nathan Richards on M-Net’s Binnelanders. During 2010 Karl acted in international films such as Winnie alongside Jennifer Hudson, and in December 2010 he secured the role of as Judge Chan in Judge Dred directed by Pete Travis. Both films to be released in 2011.

On the question of his move to Johannesburg, Thaning feels “There are a lot more local productions being produced in JHB. The soap industry doesn’t exist in Cape Town, and soap is a major part of the local industry, which means that most of the acting roles in Cape Town are diverse, but very short contracts. Cape Town services the international ad world, and international film and television." “As an actor one needs to be able to produce a wide variety of accents in Cape Town. I have played roles there where my characters have spoken languages I have never heard,” says Thaning.
