Dogs and cats are usually considered part of the family, and their owners want to give them food that’s as healthy and wholesome as what the rest of the family’s having for dinner. For environmental reasons, organic pet food is a better choice than conventional pet food. Michelle went to see what green pet food is available on the market.

Eskom Hydro Power Plant – Ingula:

Pumped storage is one of the most effective technologies and according to Eskom’s Integrated Strategic Electricity Plan, 3 new pumped storage schemes will be needed within the next 20 years. Ingula is located under the escarpment, and this powerhouse will be similar to the Drakensberg Power Station near Bergville, generating electricity during peak hours and pumping during off-peak hours.

DIG: Red Water

Every time you wait for hot water to come through the hot water tap, the cool water running out first is wasted down the drain. The cool water is called Redwater and is usually lost down the drain. This Redwater can be saved by installing a Redwater diverter. Riaan shows us how to install a redwater diverter.

Eskom eta Award winner: Jenny Young

Jenny Young was the runner up (tied) in the eta awards for power efficiency. She designed a solar cook book with wonderful recipes that can be used with the solar cooker she bought. Michelle went to investigate just how the solar cooker works and what the food tastes like.

Living off the grid with Kevin Factor

Some homeowners choose to be partially off the grid by supplying their own electricity and ditching their phone line, while relying on the convenience of city water and sewage. Others, like well-known photographer, Kevin Factor, choose to live completely off-grid by digging wells or using a cistern system to collect water. A septic tank takes care of the sewage and, just like that, no more water bill either. Riaan went to see what exactly Kevin did.
