RSG is celebrating 75 years of Afrikaans radio for three days on-air

Say goodbye to Loslip because Sê Wie is back on air with previous presenter and honourable parliamentarian, Niekie van den Berg. This is however, only for an hour as part of the Afrikaans Radio special programming, celebrating 75 years on Saturday, 27 October.
Listeners are invited to tune in on Friday, 26 October at 14:00, where they can voice their memories of radio – from the olden days to the internet radio nowadays.
RSG is celebrating 75 years of Afrikaans radio for three days on-air. The excitement already starts on Thursday, 25 October when the news bulletins of Tjailatyd, the afternoon drive time show, will be read by “Haas Das”, also known as the country’s beloved TV news reader, Riaan Cruywagen who started his broadcasting career at the Afrikaans radio service.
On Thursday evening there is a re-broadcast of NP van Wyk Louw’s radio drama Dias. This drama is 60 years old this year and was recorded in 1964 with Monica Breedt as producer. Dias is a sound gem, describing the travels around the southern part of Africa in 1487. The radio drama players that can be heard are Jan Schutte, Gerhard Viviers, Mike Heine, Roelf Jacobs, Kosie Eloff and Emgee Pretorius.
The outspoken Max du Preez is Lynette Francis’ guest in Praat Saam on Friday morning at 08:00. Du Preez was the pioneer of live talk radio with his programme Klip in die Bos. He addressed topics such as “What is an Afrikaner actually” and “The issue about national symbols” in the 90s.
The younger listeners can tune in to appreciate broadcasts from many moons ago, while the older listeners can take a trip down memory lane when they hear the bells ringing from the Union Buildings. The ringing bells were aired just before news bulletins on the B-service (Afrikaans radio) in the forming years.
There are also snippets from a variety of previous, but very popular programmes such as Leon Schuster’s Vrypostige Mikrofoon, Cobus Robinson’s Skote Petoors and Staal Burger will also pop in again. On Friday afternoon there will be a re-broadcast of the very popular afternoon story, Du Plooys van Soetmelksvlei. The children’s story Siembamba will also get a turn, as well as Musiekposbus and Esme Euvrard’s Aan die pasiente.
Verna Vels and Mari Cronje will come into studio to co-present with current presenters Martelize Brink and Johan Rademan from 09:00 to noon on Friday and Iris Bester will take the microphone again in Spektrum in the afternoon. The current affairs programme, Monitor will also take a trip down memory lane, reflecting on their first years and include well known abroad reporters Tossie Lochner, from Italy and Glenys Sugarman from Tel Aviv. Historiese Almanak done by Albe Grobbelaar will also be heard again.
Also be on the look-out for short interviews with previous presenters such as Marius du Plooy, Dawid van Lill, Nick de Jager, Gerda Coetzee, Anita Armand, Monica Breedt, Dolf van Niekerk, Corrie Huyser, Daniel Hugo, Barbara Jooste, Jan Snyman and Pieter de Bruyn.
Edwill van Aarde will be Derrich Gardner’s special guest on Saturday, 27 October for the very popular feature Vat 5 on the weekend breakfast show, Brekfis met Derrich. A very interesting and informative sport afternoon can also be heard on Saturday with inserts from previous sport commentators and sport presenters.
Saturday will air Afrikaans songs from over the years, with artists such as Anneli van Rooyen, Bles Bridges, Cora-Marie, Lance James, Chris Blignaut and many more.
There will also be plenty of competitions on Friday and Saturday where listeners can win big.
