Sterling EQ have a whirlwind couple of weeks following the release of their latest album
Promoting a new album often involves a lot of touring, interesting diets, strange locations, foreign languages and a lack of exercise; for any musical act this can be nothing short of a terrible nightmare. Not so for versatile and multi-talented Sterling EQ.
SAMA award winning four-piece super group, Sterling EQ have had a whirlwind past couple of weeks following the release of their new album, Pulse in August.
Fresh from winning an SAMA in 2011, the 14 track Pulse is Sterling EQ’s third studio album and promises to be another runaway success for the group that has proven to possess staying power in the industry, with each album release earning rave reviews from industry pundits.
Consisting of celebrated flautist and ex-marathon swimmer Carina Bruwer, Taiwanese born Eriel Huang; ex-model and award winning performer Renate Riedemann on electric violins, and actress-musician Ariella Caira on electric cello; this all-girl sensation boasts over 25 000 worldwide fans on social media, further confirming their status as one of heavyweights of the local music scene.
As an ex-marathon swimmer, Bruwer still holds some world records for her open water swimming endeavors between 2003 and 2006. Her swimming CV includes crossing the English Channel, False Bay, Straits of Gibraltar, numerous Robben Island crossings, races in USA, Greece, Italy, and many others. She is also the owner and sole proprietor of Five Seasons Entertainment Agency, representing 400+ artists across South Africa, and employing three permanent staff who run the office in Gardens, Cape Town.
Caira has a degree in Drama and swears by her daily 07:00 bikram yoga fix at Yogalife in Cape Town. She also enjoys baking and cooking with an emphasis on Italian, Thai and Indian food; and has travelled to Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Thailand, Mexico and New York.
Ex-model and Muay Thai enthusiast, Riedemann attends classes at the Total Fitness Muay Thai studio in Durbanville two to three times a week, and on 'rest days' she often does walks in the beautiful Majik Forest, walking all the way up to the border of De Grendel Winery.
Having visited countries like the USA, Canada, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Norway, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore; Huang can often been found walking around Kirstenbosch Gardens and the UCT Campus (where she is completing her Master’s Degree in Music this year). She also loves dancing and attends regular Tango classes and Milonga at Ikhaya Lodge and the Observatory Recreation Centre.
“We feel that we have created a sound which has never been heard in South Africa, or the world for that matter, and which really epitomizes "instrumental pop music", added Bruwer.
