SERVAMUS Safety and Security Magazine has been celebrating its 100th year of
publication during 2007.
As part of the celebrations, a special commemorative issue, “From
Nongqai to
SERVAMUS - A century of service: 1907 - 2007" was recently launched. This issue contains the history of the magazine from
The Nongqai to
SERVAMUS, featuring articles old and new as well as many interesting facts about the development of the police in South Africa.
The title, which is dedicated to publishing information relating to safety and
security issues, was first published in Natal under the name
The Nongqai (an armed watchman) in 1907. Due to changing circumstances of the police forces in the country it was consequently known as the
JUSTITIA, SARP, SAP and
SERVAMUS. With the establishment of the self-governing states and territories and the establishment of their own police agencies, the magazine, while reporting on their activities, focused on the then South African Police.
SERVAMUS (which means “to serve”).The change of name to
SERVAMUS in April 1979 emphasised the change to a more “service-orientated” police throughout the years.
SERVAMUS has since spread its wings, and is no longer a magazine focusing only on the South African Police Service, but a safety and security magazine for the law enforcement industry, including the metro and military police and security companies. The majority of subscribers are still members of the South African Police Service, but also include members of the Military Police, Metropolitan Police agencies, students in the policing field, and persons involved in the general security industry also subscribe to the magazine.
SERVAMUS also serves as a communication channel between various agencies, subscribers and international bodies and individuals.
In 2005,
SERVAMUS was awarded a
SAPPI/Pica Award as the best magazine in the category: Safety and Security, Medical and Rescue.
Copies of this commemorative issue are available from the publishers
at R40 per magazine.
