Ladles of Love has called on people of all ages, interests and careers to participate in Ubuntu world record-breaking events by volunteering 67 minutes to craft and pack items for small children in need on Thursday, 18 July, in honour of Mandela Day.
The events aim to create a better world for all children and are endorsed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, as funds raised will provide nutrition and support to nourish, nurture and grow pre-school children in our poorest communities, says Ladles of Love.
Gushwell Brooks, head of Nelson Mandela Day, says, "Ladles of Love is doing so much toward food security and their efforts need to be replicated and given a massive platform. It is ironic that a quarter of food in South Africa goes to waste whilst a quarter of South Africans do not have access to adequate food."
"Their work in feeding communities, providing resources and skills for increased urban farming and the awareness attached thereto is essential for real action in combatting food insecurity, a cause most definitely worth supporting," adds Brooks.
The volunteer stations comprise:
- making sandwiches
- filling buckets of hope
- packing nutrition boxes
- crafting toys
- creating books and posters, and
- innovating food garden kits.
Performing artists and top DJs will be entertaining volunteers in a 10-hour live show, keeping the spirit of Mandela Day festive and allowing everyone to do good, for good and have fun, says the organisation. The event concludes with a Lovefest party from 17:00 to 20:00, celebrating Ladles of Love's 10th anniversary.
Ladles of Love says that there are three live event locations:
- Johannesburg: Constitution Hill, Braamfontein
- Pretoria: Menlyn Maine, Central Square, and
- Cape Town: Lookout, V&A Waterfront.
Those preferring to 'Create Your Own' event, can participate from anywhere in the world, as once your ticket is purchased you are provided with a 'how to guide' making it simple and easy to make items to support the little children's cause, says the organisation.
Founder of Ladles of Love Danny Diliberto says, "We believe everyone wants to roll up their sleeves and do something to make a difference, and every act of kindness makes one huge impact of love. Become a 'Love Activist' and together let's be the change we want to see in our country. As Madiba says, 'It is in your hands'".
As a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), Ladles of Love says that it can issue Section 18A Tax certificates to all individuals and companies contributing to the campaign.
Individuals are encouraged to buy tickets here to join the Ladles of Love missions at events in Johannesburg, Menlyn and Cape Town on Thursday, 18 July.
After purchasing tickets, volunteers simply select their time slot hourly from 09:00 to 17:00 and choose a 'Volunteer Activation Station' from the list of six options.
