In 2024 alone, Mustadafin says that it provided 8 847 470 meals, averaging 27 910 meals each week, to struggling families, vulnerable children and the elderly. The foundation's mission is more than just feeding people — it's about restoring hope, strengthening communities and changing lives, one meal at a time.

Recent statistics reveal a deepening crisis of hunger and poverty in South Africa. An estimated 2.1 million households are struggling with food insecurity, while 23% of children live in severe poverty. These vulnerable children face a 50% higher risk of life-threatening malnutrition, robbing them of their health, development and future. As hunger tightens its grip on communities, urgent intervention is needed to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and no family is left without hope, Mustadafin says.

"Many communities in South Africa continue to face very challenging living circumstances with limited access to food. For those observing Ramadan, the struggle against hunger in under-resourced areas becomes even more profound during this sacred time," shares Ghairunisa Johnstone Cassiem, Director of Mustadafin.

"Irrespective of religion, Mustadafin has been supporting all vulnerable communities in need," Cassiem adds.

Mustadafin says its food programme extends its reach to the broader community, including the homeless and school children. Addressing hunger among students is particularly vital, as inadequate nutrition impairs a child's ability to concentrate and perform academically. Additionally, stunting, a consequence of chronic malnutrition, often results in delayed mental development, poor school performance and a higher chance of drop-out. These challenges perpetuate cycles of poverty and hinder national economic productivity.

"Your contributions will play a pivotal role in providing essential assistance to those in need," says Cassiem.

"Our current focus is to support the Muslim community during the month of Ramadan. While many commit to their fast, there are so many who do not have food in the first place," Cassiem adds.

How Your Donations Make a Difference

  • Food Parcels: Mustadafin distributes food packs to impoverished families across the Western Cape. Each pack sustains a family of five for an entire month, with an estimated cost of R900 per pack.
  • Pot of Food: The foundation frequently responds to community call-outs with food distribution, clothing and essential goods donation drives. A single pot of food can feed hundreds of individuals lacking access to nutritious and regular food supplies, costing R3 500 per pot.

"This is a time for reflection and generosity. Even a small donation can make a lasting impact on the lives of those who endure unimaginable hardship daily," says Cassiem. "Donations are especially needed now as the colder winter months approach and many community residents are starting to feel anxious about shelter and food."
