‘Izandla Ziyagezana’, which means “one hand helping another”, challenged South African schools to collect Albany Superior plastic bags for a chance to win a range of Albany prizes for the school and the community at large.

On Tuesday, 11 November, Albany held a handover event at Tshebedisano Primary School in Pimville, Gauteng and announced the school as the national top collecting school for thie campaign. The school won itself the grand prize of R100 000 by collecting over 60 000 Albany Superior bags. Tshebedisano Primary managed to beat hundreds of schools that took part in the initiative.

“I am very happy because our children will positively benefit from this competition. It took us six months to complete. The project was managed by Ms. Pamela Mokori and the Tshebedisano Primary staff members as well as the learners,” said Phillip Mokgojoa, principal of Tshebedisano Primary School.

The value of the campaign didn’t go unnoticed by Government as Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi also joined Albany at the school prize handover.

“On behalf of Albany, I would like to congratulate Tshebedisano Primary School and all the other schools that participated in the ‘Izandla Ziyagezana’ campaign. The main objective of the campaign was to encourage schools to do their bit to save the environment. The overall participation from schools nationally was overwhelming,” said Percy Masemene, Albany Brand Manager.

Tshebedisano Primary School was not the only school that walked away with a prize. Among the other winning schools were Thlokomelo Primary School (Gauteng), Tiamoko Primary School (Gauteng), Sweetwater Primary School (Kwa Zulu Natal), Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School (Gauteng), Tyburn Primary School (Kwa Zulu Natal) and Kuyasa Primary School (Western Cape). The schools were awarded R25 000 and were linked to the six Albany Bakery catchment areas.

The top 100 collecting schools nationally each won R2500 and the first 500 schools to reach the 25 000 target each won themselves R1000.
