It is expected that a new date for her celebration event will be announced in the near future.
Diagnosed in 2007 with breast cancer following a routine check-up, she underwent chemotherapy and a successful procedure to remove the cancerous growth. Dube beat the disease on 11 January 2008. In September this year she discovered a further lump and underwent a single mastectomy to ensure her continued remission. Taking a hiatus from her fast-paced schedule to recuperate, Dube is doing well and recovering from surgery. The actress who celebrates her 70
th birthday this year has been advised by her medical team to get some rest, resulting in her birthday celebrations planned for Thursday, 22 October being postponed, with a new date to be announced soon.
Dube said, “The surgery went well and I’m so happy to be home. I am disappointed to postpone my birthday celebrations and the launch of The Celebrities for Good Causes Foundation, but I have to make my health a priority. I am feeling a lot better, but I am going to need a little more time to recover. As they say ‘the show must go on’ and I will be now celebrating my 70
th birthday later than planned. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received from my friends, colleagues, fans and the business partners throughout my recovery.”
Dube plans to celebrate her 70
th birthday later this year, coinciding with the launch of The Celebrities for Good Causes Foundation and its inaugural initiative – The 70 000 National School Shoes Project.
According to Dube’s representatives, she is particularly disappointed as she was looking forward to the celebrations planned, marking not only her milestone birthday but the launch of The Celebrities for Good Causes Foundation. “We wish Lillian a speedy recovery and pledge our support as she recuperates. By being so open about her condition, Lillian has created awareness of breast cancer and continues to encourage women throughout the country to take charge of their health and have regular checkups. We look forward to announcing the new date for the concert in the near future.”
Dube explains, “The 70 000 National School Shoes project is just the beginning of what we intend to become an annual initiative under The Celebrities for Good Causes Foundation. The basis of the organisation is to encourage South African celebrities to utilise their positive influences and networks under one banner to better the lives of those in need.”
