media update’s Talisa Jansen van Rensburg takes a look at why humour encourages more engagement on social media posts.

There is a good reason why people say ‘laughter is the best medicine’; this is because when a person laughs, it “triggers the release of endorphins — the body’s natural feel-good chemicals,” according to an article on Help Guide. People enjoy making others feel good, so if that is what your content provided them with they will definitely want to share it and engage with the content.

Here’s why humour adds that little ‘something extra’ to your content:

1. People love to laugh

People are far more likely to engage with content that they found funny and entertaining. Why, you ask? Simple! They want to feel good, which is done when giving them content that makes them laugh.

A South African brand that always gets their following to laugh is Nandos.

The reason why this post garnered so much traffic is because both people who know what chakras are and not will enjoy ‘summoning’ their new bottle of Nando’s hot sauce.

You can gain a lot of inspiration from Nandos, so be sure to always keep a close eye on them, since they always stay relevant and keep up with the trends.

2. It makes your brand unique

There are a lot of influencers on social media, most of which do the same thing, such as makeup tutorials or product reviews. So if you want to stand out from the crowd, a great way to do that is with humour. Not only will this make your content more fun and unique but it will also make sure you are memorable.

If you are not the ‘funny type’, don’t worry! You can just share funny content from other people or even put a different spin on it. This will also allow you to build online relationships with different influencers or even brands.

For example, Denny's Diner took a current trend about elf on the shelf and added a tweet.

3. Get shared a lot faster

Give people something fun to contribute to and they will be more likely to engage with your content. A great example of this is the world_record_egg. The admin of this page set up a challenge back in 2019 where they said they want to set a world record to get the most likes on a post. At the time, Kylie Jenner carried that title, where she had 18 million likes on a single post.

Soon, this blew up and was shared with countless friends and family. “Just a week and a half after it was first posted, the @world_record_egg post overtook Kylie’s 18 million likes becoming the most liked post ever on the platform,” according to Moon Dust Agency.

The reason why this post was successful was because it’s funny to think that an egg can get more likes than a highly influential personality.
