Having a big following is great and all, but most people follow an account and then forget about it.

They passively scroll through posts and maybe hit the like button every once in a while.

A community, however, is completely different.

Stop Scrolling! media update's Alrika Möller explains the value of a social media community below.

When you build a following, you are more focussed on getting those posts out and having people hit the follow button. It's all about quantity over quality.

When creating a community on social media, it is all about shared passion and engagement — meaning quality over quantity. Social media users are more likely to engage with your posts and share their own posts relating to the shared passion of a community.

A community can be anything from a group of people who care about a brand to a worldwide book club that talks about their favourite books on social media (hello, BookTok).

If you want to create a community, you have to engage with other users and start conversations that your followers — and other interested users or anyone else — can continue and be a part of.

Social media communities are safe spaces for people with shared interests.

We believe a social media community can be a lot more valuable than a social media following. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section below.
