Primedia Outdoor will introduce learners to the outdoor industry and highlight the opportunities available within this context. Primedia Outdoor is also supporting the Careers Expo through promotion on its Rank TV in Alexandra beforehand, with further coverage by Rank TV community reporters.

The Alexandra Careers Expo has been established by the City of Johannesburg to reach out to youth from the area. The event is aimed at high school learners, those studying in tertiary institutions, and unemployed youth.

It seeks to create an environment for engagement between the region, its partners, private companies, and the youth of Alexandra by providing a platform where information, guidance, and opportunities can be communicated to the youth.

Currently, one in every five South Africans is aged 15 to 24. Johannesburg is predominantly populated by the youth, with a concentration in the working age group of between 20 years and 39 years.

This is primarily a result of economic immigration. The city attracts a large number of job seekers from across the country which presents a challenge, as the City of Johannesburg faces a high youth unemployment rate, currently at around 31.5%.

For this reason, the city has placed a specific focus on the issue of youth unemployment and seeks to address this through both positive economic growth, and programmes such as the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), among others.

Primedia Outdoor is also committed to the development of young talent through its internship programme, which has been running since 2013.

Of the interns taken in, a significant number have subsequently been absorbed into either Primedia Outdoor or one of the Primedia companies. For example, of the 15 interns taken in in 2015, eight were subsequently employed by Primedia.

“We are looking forward to presenting at this year’s Careers Expo in Alexandra,” says Primedia Outdoor’s sales and marketing executive, Peter Lindstrom. “We believe that the City of Johannesburg is providing us with a valuable opportunity to educate and inspire potential new entrants to the outdoor industry.”
