Between the gruesomely good wordplay and horrifyingly hilarious analogies, brands like
OnStar,
Burger King,
Heinz and
TWIX have created advertisements that are so great it's scary!
So, if the Halloween bug has bitten you,
media update's Lara Smit is treating you to all these frighteningly funny and fantastic adverts below.
Let's enter the realm of spooky selling:
OnStar — 'Scary better'
As a part of its 'Better Never Stops' campaign, OnStar was on point with its Halloween ad this October. The ad 'howl'-ariously displays the shock and horror experienced by OnStar clients when confronted with the terrifyingly rapid advancement of their cars' technology.
Perhaps the scariest part of it all is that customers receive these updates on their vehicles for free, without the need for paid data using the company's over-the-air software technology. So,
according to the brand, "Your vehicle won't be possessed, but it might just feel like it."
Burger King — 'Home of the Ghosts'
This October, Burger King got into the spirit of Halloween by helping its Royal Perks members make their ghost-busting dreams a reality with a ghost detector feature on the brand's app.
According to
AdAge, this feature makes use of the built-in magnetic field sensor of a customer's smartphone. This means that customers can
actually find electromagnetic fields in their vicinity, indicating paranormal activity. How
spooktacular is
that?
What's more is that if ghost hunting makes you work up an appetite, discovering a hidden spirit in your house will score you a free Ghost Pepper Whopper. So you won't go to bed hungry (if you can still go to bed after discovering your paranormal peer, that is).
Heinz — 'Vegetarian Vampire Recruitment'
Heinz created some Halloween humour by playing on the idea that its famous tomato sauce has an uncanny resemblance to blood. It did this by introducing customers to Toby — a vampire influencer.
Toby isn't quite like other vampires though; he made the choice a couple of hundred years ago to become a vegetarian "because humans are people too."
So instead of human blood, Toby supplements his diet with Heinz's vegetarian blood.
By poking fun at contemporary culture, this ad is the perfect combination of spooky and sweet satire!
TWIX — 'Halloween Spirits'
TWIX also had a few tricks when it came to advertising its treats this October.
Its ad depicts a group of teenagers attempting to communicate with spirits on Halloween. It succeeds in its mission as an invisible force unwraps a TWIX bar and bites it — completely spooking the teenagers and causing them to scream.
It then ends with a hilarious caption that reads, "The spirits have decided. Left or right, either is a good decision."
This short and simple advert is frighteningly funny and eerily effective at getting the Halloween and marketing message across.
