"Talk about a dream come true. I have always wanted to work at 5FM and, finally, it’s happening," Mdutyulwa says. "Words can’t begin to describe the emotions, but I will express them on every show once I get started."
Producer Given Baloyi says it is Mdutyulwa's unique personality and worldview that will make the show stand out and grab the attention of 5FM’s community.
"The show will have an eccentric and whimsical feel. We want to create a show where they get to let their guard down and tap into their inner child," he says.
5FM station manager Justine Cullinan says this dynamite partnership is undeniably a creative pairing with the perfect fit for 5FM. "5FM has the most diversely represented and dynamic collection of on-air and producer family members," she says.
Cullinan adds, “With these two new talents, we are only taking that positioning further. We are looking forward to delivering a high-intensity weeknight show to the 5FM community.”
5FM has also announced that Ryan Nair, also known as Ryan the DJ, has been offered his own show on the station, taking over the Saturday night time slot from 19:00 to 22:00 with the Weekender5 show.
Nair was the winner of the 5FM Ultimix DJ competition in 2012, which landed him a regular resident feature on the station as well as on their event line-ups. Nair also recently represented the country at the Red Bull 3Style World Finals in Poland, where he was placed in the top six.
"I’ve always held the 5FM Saturday night slot in high regard. I grew up listening to Derek the Bandit and Roger Goode’s Saturday Surgery – they were iconic shows," says Nair.
"I would listen to them religiously. Thus, having the opportunity to host my own show on a Saturday night on 5FM is an absolute honour and dream come true for me," Nair adds. "I’m really excited for the journey ahead, as well as being able to share good music and connect with my fans and listeners across South Africa."
Cullinan says, "His skill in music selection is incomparable, and I know that his show will be carefully curated with mix music from the best in the world."
"As one of our Weekender5, he will add immense value to 5FM’s specialist music fame and will continue the station’s legacy in delivering to the 5FM community the best mixologists and deck wreckers the country has to offer," Cullinan concludes.
