Briefly News has announced that it has joined the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Media Compact. Briefly News will now play a role in raising awareness about the SDG. It is the first South African media company on the United Nation's SDG Media Compact list.
Briefly News is the only South African media company on the United Nation's SDG Media Compact list at present.
The company says that it is a special privilege that the United Nations extends to leading media organisations around the world to partake in the collective responsibility of making the world a safer and better place, as envisioned in the SDG agenda.
"This gives Briefly News the chance to engage with the United Nations, while highlighting issues pertaining to Sustainable Development Goals," says Briefly's managing director Rianette Cluley.
Before joining the media compact, Briefly News says that it had already contributed to the SDG through its consistent coverage of human-interest stories, alongside Corporate Social Responsibility programmes that have positively impacted the lives of many to date.
"For example, with the help of our global audience, we were able to help South African moms and pensioners who were hard-hit by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic through the Briefly News and Pick n Pay hamper project in 2020," says the company.
"The partnership with the United Nations will bolster its commitment to continue touching lives through sharing stories that empower, inspire, educate and evoke positive emotions and change the lives of South Africans," adds the company.
Through this partnership, the company says that it will now play an even bigger role in advancing the United Nation's SDG agenda by reporting on SDG-related issues such as eradication of poverty and hunger, access to quality education and gender equality.
Briefly News will also have the opportunity to engage and interact with senior leaders and SDG experts on a priority basis to shed light on some of the issues outlined in the SDG agenda.
