If you are anything like me, you have considered jumping on the trend and starting a podcast. This idea then leads to reading a lot of articles titled Everything you need to know about starting a podcast.

While these articles are great, some mention choosing a podcast format, while others warn you of the dangers of not having a podcast structure.

Format and structure — aren't they the same thing? Not quite!

media update's Alrika Möller explains the difference:

The format of your podcast is almost like a genre or category. Are you interviewing guests? An interview is an example of a podcast format. Others include conversations, group discussions and monologues.

Choosing a format from the start is crucial for any successful podcast, as it will create consistency in your episodes and determine what kind of listeners you will have.

Structure, however, refers to the flow of your podcast. Do you have an intro? Do you have a segment that occurs on every episode or a specific way of ending your podcast?

Determining the structure is an important part of ensuring the episodes don't go off track and end up being three hours long.
