To qualify for the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies Awards, JSE-listed businesses are required to hold a minimum market capitalisation of R5-billion as of Saturday, 31 August, with winners determined by the highest returns for their shareholders over a five-year period, based on a theoretical initial investment of R10 000, say the awards.

According to the Sunday Times, Alphamin Resource Corp's five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39.6% for the period from Sunday, 1 September 2019 to Saturday, 31 August, means that R10 000 invested in 2019 would have delivered R53 976 in 2024. Grindrod Ltd realised an annual CAGR of 33.2% to deliver R41 879, while Pan African Resources returned R35 721 with a CAGR of 29% over the same five-year period.
