A blogging niche refers to the overarching content theme that a blogger writes about. Having a niche is an absolute must since it narrows down your audience and competition, helping you achieve success faster.

Additionally, a niche makes the job of finding and choosing topics for posts way easier!

media update's Joreke Kleynhans guides you in choosing the right niche.

Step 1 — Write down the Topics You Can Talk About for Hours

The most popular blogs post at least twice per week, and if you want to build a successful blog, you will have to do that too. Therefore, you need enough knowledge and interest in your chosen niche to consistently produce content and publish regularly.

Step 2 — Research the Frequency at Which These Topics Are Being Searched

Blogs mostly serve to answer netizens' questions. Think about the things you Google daily — for example:

  • how long to boil an egg
  • gift ideas for grandmas, or
  • small apartment decor ideas.

Since the most successful blogs answer their readers' questions, you need to narrow down your list of interests to things that people actually ask questions about.

Keyword research tools like Ahrefs can help determine how often people turn to the Internet for answers you can provide.

Step 3 — Understand the Competition

Once your list has been narrowed down in terms of search frequency, type your remaining niches into different search engines.

If the first pages of the search results consist of wildly successful blogs, your chances of success unfortunately decrease dramatically. It's not impossible to build a successful blog among strong competition, but it will be harder and take longer.

However, the less competition you have, the easier your blog will become a go-to.

Ideally, you should choose a niche with medium to high search volumes and low to medium competition levels.
