Traditional forms of media are still prevalent, however, the younger demographic is more likely to consume news where they are most active — social media platforms.

Due to the lack of regulation on social media, misinformation can spread effortlessly, prompting concerns about how TikTok is altering our news consumption habits and how to effectively manage the information disseminated on this platform.

What better way to get insights on this than from someone who actively spreads news and information on the platform themselves? Austin Macaskill is a South African news TikTok content creator we connected with to get some insights into this interesting industry.

How do you decide which news stories to cover?

I look at what is trending on social media, what people are talking about and what the big stories currently are in South Africa. If a topic is getting a lot of traction online, I will look to make a video about it. Otherwise, I pick topics that I find interesting.

What challenges do you face when reporting news on a fast-paced platform like TikTok?

People can be a bit unhinged in what they comment and aren't very accountable for what they say regarding the topic at hand. Also, there is a lot of fake news / biased reporting to be careful of.

Do you think TikTok is changing how South Africans consume news?

Definitely. Most people get their news from social media these days, at least amongst the younger demographic. Many people find it easier to consume media in short-form video format rather than reading wordy articles. We have unfortunately got a short attention span these days.

Also, I think the public doesn't trust mainstream / legacy media anymore because of a lack of objective reporting.

What role do you think TikTok plays in shaping public opinion on current affairs?

It plays a huge role. It's easy for an individual to believe whatever the majority believes or is saying. So, if one sees everyone having a certain opinion online, that person will be more likely to adopt that opinion as well. Especially in the case of looking up to a creator they value. They could end up agreeing with whatever the creator says because they trust him / her.

How do you handle misinformation and fact-checking on a platform where content spreads so quickly?

It's important to use as many sources as possible. Don't go with what just one article is saying. I also make sure to word my content very carefully. If facts aren't yet confirmed, I will make sure to use phrases such as "reportedly" or "this is what some people are saying, but we aren't quite sure yet."

I also make sure that anything I state in my video is backed up by some kind of reputable source.

What are some ethical considerations you keep in mind when reporting news on TikTok?

I try to avoid calling out specific individuals or being critical in my reporting. I don't want anyone to be harmed or bullied due to my content. Also, I believe in being objective and not sharing my opinion. I never share my opinion because I believe news is meant to be unbiased.

Do you believe TikTok has the potential to replace traditional news sources for younger audiences?

I think it already has. Young people get their information from WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok.

Have you faced any backlash or controversy over news stories you've covered? If so, how do you navigate it?

Yes, but never to the extent where I've had to remove a video. I back the videos I make and the information I report. Some viewers try to claim my information is incorrect, but I always encourage them to do their own research or to look at the sources I've used. People are very opinionated and backlash is inevitable, but it doesn't bother me, and it's the minority of viewers.

What advice would you give to aspiring digital news creators who want to share credible news on social media?

Have fun with it. If you enjoy it, it will be easier to remain consistent and to exhibit your passion to the audience.
