SuperSport announces the launch of a new campaign titled the Springbok 'Dream Team,' inviting South African rugby supporters to vote for their preferred Springbok players of the modern era by position.

Aimed at celebrating decades of rugby excellence, the campaign encourages spirited debate and national participation, as supporters select their preferred players from a shortlist. Among the front-row contenders are Os du Randt, Steven Kitshoff, Tendai Mtawarira, Ox Nché and Gurthro Steenkamp, says SuperSport.

With a rugby legacy spanning several decades, debates over who deserves a place in the iconic green and gold jersey remain a staple of South African sporting culture. As 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Springboks' historic first Rugby World Cup victory, SuperSport's 'Dream Team' campaign offers a timely opportunity to reflect on three decades of excellence, says the broadcaster.

Launching in conjunction with the Springbok international season, the initiative invites supporters to vote for their chosen players from the past 30 years. The selection pool extends beyond World Cup winners, allowing for a broader recognition of players who have left a lasting impact on South African rugby, adds the broadcaster.

The campaign will conclude with the official announcement of the Springbok 'Dream Team' on Saturday, 22 November. The reveal will coincide with a significant milestone for SuperSport, which celebrates 30 years of broadcasting. The dual anniversary underscores SuperSport's longstanding commitment to South African rugby and its passionate supporters, says the broadcaster.

Supporters Are Encouraged to Vote

Voting officially opened on Tuesday, 24 June — marking exactly 30 years since South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup triumph. What were once informal debates among supporters have now been brought to the national stage, with SuperSport handing the final say to the public.

Over the course of 15 weeks, supporters will be invited to vote for their top player in each position, culminating in the selection of a complete Springbok starting XV. The campaign will be supported across SuperSport's on-air programming, digital channels and social media platforms, encouraging widespread engagement and spirited discussion, says the broadcaster.

How to Cast a Vote and Make History

To participate, fans can visit the SuperSport website and register to vote. Each week, a new player position will be featured via an interactive carousel, offering a curated list of candidates for selection.

The voting process begins with the Loosehead Prop position. Supporters can cast their vote by selecting their preferred player; however, it is important to note that votes are final and cannot be amended once submitted. The final 'Dream Team' will be determined entirely by public vote, placing the power to shape this historic lineup firmly in the hands of South African rugby supporters, adds the broadcaster.

SuperSport Announces Participant Prizes

Participants in the Springbok 'Dream Team' campaign also stand a chance to win a range of prizes throughout the 15-week initiative, courtesy of SuperSport, says the broadcaster.

"The Springboks are the pride of our nation, and Your World of Champions is incredibly proud to share such a close affinity and partnership with the four-time Rugby World Cup winners," says SuperSport Chief Executive Officer, Rendani Ramovha. "Naturally, countless heroes have been forged throughout these glorious 30 years, and so SuperSport's 'Dream Team' is the ideal opportunity to honour these legends and settle many rumbling debates."

Ramovha believes that the campaign is, without a doubt, the best way to celebrate the shared excellence that defines both entities.

"SuperSport has broadcast every subsequent victory — in 2007, 2019 and 2023 — of the men in green and gold, along with every twist and turn of South African rugby lore in between. In doing so, we have forever intertwined those enduring images with Your World of Champions," says Ramovha. "The SuperSport 'Dream Team' invites fans to be a part of this historic celebration and places their voice firmly in the forefront."

Vote and Earn Points

The campaign's interactive format ensures an engaging experience over its full 15-week duration. Fans are encouraged to vote consistently, with each vote contributing to a personal score on a public leaderboard. Consecutive weekly participation increases point values per vote, while missed weeks result in no score accumulation.

Additional points can be earned through various activities, including sharing votes on social media, subscribing to campaign updates and participating in the "Kick for Three" game — adding an extra layer of competition and engagement for dedicated supporters.

The image of Francois Pienaar receiving the Webb Ellis Trophy from President Nelson Mandela in 1995 remains an iconic moments in South African sporting history — symbolising not only a national triumph but the beginning of the Springboks' rise to global rugby prominence.

Through the Springbok 'Dream Team' campaign, SuperSport honours the legacy of these heroes by entrusting the selection of the greatest XV to those who have supported them throughout the decades: the supporters.

With prizes, recognition and the opportunity to shape history, the campaign offers an exciting and meaningful way for supporters to celebrate 30 years of the Springboks — guided by their enduring partner in sport, concludes SuperSport.
