Gauteng audiences will be transported to ancient China during November and December, when Joburg Promusica presents Disney’s Mulan Junior – the first time this show has been professionally produced in South Africa.

A top-flight South African cast has been assembled for this magical theatrical encounter, based on the popular 1998 Disney animated movie. It will be staged at the Joburg Promusica theatre in Florida Park, Roodepoort, until 12 December.

Join Carmen Pretorius in the role of Mulan, as she embarks on an evocative trip into legend and lore. Carmen recently played Gabriella in High School Musical and will star in the South African stage production of Mamma Mia! next year. Other well-known actors include Johan Baird (Blues Brothers); Ashleigh Harvey; Botha Enslin; Nicol Sheraton; Ayanda Yako; and Jacques Moolman.

With a 17-strong cast, songs straight from the Disney movie, and professional choreography, this children’s production is in a league of its own and is not to be missed.

The tale of Mulan is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a clumsy young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to take her ailing father’s place in the Imperial Army against the invading Hun forces. Her brave subterfuge results in many adventures, trials and tribulations, accompanied by a misfit dragon and a lucky cricket, and she ultimately proves herself to be a deft thinker and a true heroine.

With its strong central female character, the story reflects universal themes that adults and children alike will relate to, such as the importance of overcoming prejudice and the individual making sacrifices for the greater good of society. Expect non-stop action, music and excitement in this irresistible and visually rich family show.

The auditorium, stage and technical facilities of the Joburg Promusica Theatre present the most advanced theatre environment for children’s theatre in Gauteng and, with the accomplished Kosie Smit as set and lighting designer on the team, we have the makings of a truly magical show.

Joburg Promusica’s version of Disney’s Mulan Jr promises to enchant and entertain this festive season. The production is directed by Denver Vraagom (Sheldon Adams in 7de Laan); assisted by Elizabet Morapedi; and musical direction is by David Boverhoff.

The production is based on the 1998 Disney film Mulan and the story Fa Mulan by Robert D. San Souci. Music and lyrics are by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel; Stephen Schwartz; Jeanine Tesori; and Alexa Junge. The music was adapted and arranged by Bryan Louiselle and the book was adapted by Patricia Cotter.

There are various performances daily. Booking is through Computicket, and school groups can contact Queen Mooki at 011 674 1357/8 for special group bookings.
