Only this time, it's not on traditional FM radio, it's on the pioneering internet radio station,
2oceansvibe Radio, where he'll pilot The Ian F Show in the breakfast slot.
Launched in Cape Town on 30 July 2010,
2oceansVibe Radio has grown from an audience of 1 000 to 35 000, with over 25 000 downloads of its smartphone app, available on BlackBerry, iPhone and Android.
Naturally, as word spread, so did the geographical reach of
2oceansVibe Radio. Freedom is a universal concept. All of a sudden
2oceansVibe was sitting with a substantial Johannesburg audience. There was only one thing to do. And thus the
2oceansVibe Radio Johannesburg Studio was born, and with it, the
2oceansVibe Radio Breakfast Show, live every weekday morning from 07:00 to 10:00.
So where has Ian been since leaving Sasha Martinengo's side?
This, from the man himself; "I went traveling overseas, to the UK. I spent two years working in radio there and also traveling Europe, and eventually I couldn't deal with London people. And I missed home. Home is South Africa, and I love it here."
News of Ian's return made its way across the desk of many a mainstream radio station manager. This begs the question, why did Ian move away from FM?
"I need to do my own thing. The opportunity presented itself to work in a commercial environment in FM. I just realised that there was more that I wanted to do, and I was going to be hampered by rules and regulations. So thats why I've put everything else on the backburner to give this a go, because I think it's got a very good future. I love internet radio.
We are very, very aware that we can play what we want, and to a certain extent, say what we want, which is good."
Ergo, you get to listen to what you want.
Rounding up the rest of the
2oceansVibe Radio breakfast team is acclaimed industry pro, ex-
5FM station producer and longstanding wing-man of Ian, Brendan 'Spike' Ballantine (producer), Ricci Regnani (co-presenter), and Lisa Davis (co-presenter), who has been described as a budding radio talent and very easy on the eyes. This is where the webcam comes into its own.
And for those of you who were wondering, you can still catch Ian on television as the iconic voice of Tiger Wheel & Tyre.
