Umhlobo Wenene FM was first launched in 1966. The SABC-owned radio station is the second-largest vernacular radio station in South Africa with an average of 4.588 million listeners, according to the latest RAMS. Umhlobo Wenene FM has transmitters in seven of the provinces, but the majority of its audience is in the Eastern Cape. Its footprint includes the Western Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Mpumalanga. The radio station is also sponsor to the 10km Classic Marathan (March), Great Train race (August), Robben Island Outside Broadcast for Heritage Day (September) and the Jazz Festival (October). The station targets listeners in the 25-49 age group, who fall in the LSM 4-8 bracket. The station broadcasts to the Xhosa community and offers music, information, talk, drama and sport. The music repertoire on the station consists of Jazz, R&B, Kwaito, House and Gospel.
