The Beneficiary at Artscape
Media 131
The Beneficiary, by Sinethemba Twani, which was showcased last year, will be the second production in the current 7th Artscape spring drama season.
Twani (22) originally wrote the play in isiXhosa, and the play then came to the attention of acclaimed writer and director Fatima Dike, who assisted Twani with the English translation. Dike will also be directing the play.
The play explores the manner in which property is inherited in the isiXhosa culture, and the impact this has on a young man, Lifa, from a Cape Town township, whose first love is soccer. Lifa lives with his mother and one day his grandfather arrives from the Eastern Cape to persuade his only grandson to leave the city and return to the farm. He has six daughters and none of them can inherit his land. This gentle comedy combines with moving inter-relationships as Lifa faces two very difficult choices.
The play features Chris Gxalaba, Zoliswa Kawe, Thabang Sidloyi, Nobuhle Ketelo and Melikhaya Tana. Designs are by Dicky Longhurst.
The play has two low-price previews on 20 and 21 October at 19:30, and runs from 22 October to 5 November at 20:15, with matinee performances at 14:30 on Saturday 29 October and 5 November. Tuesday performances are at 19:30 in the Artscape Arena. Tickets are R60 and R80 and can be booked at Computicket or Artscape Dial-A-Seat on 021 471 7695.
