With its position as both a technology solution provider and as a music content aggregator – holding licensing rights with all major labels, almost all the established indie labels, and independent artists in South Africa - Mondia Media SA has been able to develop holistic, credible and sustainable digital music solutions for a range of clients across the African continent.
Dr Amadeo Rahmann, CEO of Mondia Media explains further: “As a global leader in digital entertainment services, Mondia Media understands both the opportunities and challenges of supplying digital entertainment solutions in emerging markets. Working in close collaboration with our team in South Africa, we are creating popular digital music services for African consumers. We are proud that Mondia Media is the South African music industry's preferred digital partner and look forward to extending this role across the African continent”
Mondia Media has to date engaged with over 700 artists, aggregators and labels, rapidly building one of the largest catalogues of high quality digital music products in Africa. Their breadth and depth of content is complimented by technology solutions that are built for Africa and yet powered by the latest international advances and innovations from the company’s Hamburg base.
As the technology and content provider for clients and projects including O Music (launched by DStv), Samsung’s pan-African music service, the upcoming re-launch of Look & Listen’s digital music retail platform, and the recent Mxit Music, Mondia Media is the one-stop solution for companies looking to find effective ways to monetise and leverage digital music platforms.
Mondia’s most recent success was the launch of Mxit Music – South Africa’s first socially integrated mobile music service providing fans with a monetized platform to engage with their favourite local artists.
Anton Van Niekerk, VP: User Monetisation at Mxit has this to say about the project: “The partnership with Mondia Media gives our users access to cost effective and legal, high quality, full track music downloads via Mxit. With their music selection always achieving at least 95% of their international and local charts, our users can be sure to find their favourite hits. Mondia Media’s global industry relationships and extensive experience in the digital music space, combined with their innovative approach to music dissemination, made them the right partner for us.”
In 2012, Mondia launched an ad-funded music service for Samsung in SA, Kenya and Nigeria. PocketmusiQ, available on the Galaxy Pocket device, has enjoyed phenomenal uptake with hundreds of thousands of Pocket customers engaging with the service. Samsung plans to roll out this popular music service to Samsung feature phone customers across the continent.
Jaco Van Zyl, Product and Marketing Manager for Samsung Africa, says “Cylo Digital/Mondia Media and PocketmusiQ services played a vital part in the exceptional success of the Samsung Galaxy Pocket launched in 2012. Pocket MusiQ afforded the consumer a unique and rich localized catalogue of music that differentiated the Galaxy Pocket smartphone in the market.”
Mondia Media is currently collaborating with Look & Listen to re-launch their digital music store that will offer South African music fans the best of local and international hits, as well as a vast choice for independent music and back catalogue tracks.
Howard Lazarus, chairperson of Look & Listen explains, “Look & Listen is proud to announce it is working with Mondia Media in a joint venture to bring a new digital music solution to South Africa. The solution is based on Mondia’s innovative approach and international support network that will allow South Africans to legally download high quality MP3’s as well as full albums directly to their mobile phones.”
One of the fundamental principles that also set Mondia Media apart is their commitment to creating sustainable platforms that enable African artists and writers to earn royalties and to legally distribute their music, both locally and internationally, on multiple digital platforms.
Keith Lister, former CEO of Sony Music Africa and now executive chairperson of SAMPRA, supports this commitment: “We created Cylo in partnership with Mondia Media because there was a clear need across the music recording industry for a dynamic but credible and transparent aggregator, backed by world class technology, that would offer the most cost effective digital distribution solution to all record companies, while being 100% compliant with the rights of all labels, artists, composers and publishers. Mondia Media and Cylo have lived up to that vision.”
