The Mpumalanga-based SABC SiSwati radio station, Ligwalagwala FM has proven to pave good path in implementing its mandate which is to inform and educate the nation. Recently the station’s 06:00 to 18:00 shows starts with a national anthem with the aim to teach South Africans to know their national anthem by heart.
Previous incidents in sports have shown that most South African citizens appear to ignore the importance of practicing the anthem, especially the youth. The national anthem will be heard on the SiSwati airwaves throughout the year, during the Kusile Mzansi, from 06:30 to 10:00; Tfokomala Nami, from 10:00 to Noon; Khibika Natsi, from Noon to 15:00; and Asambe Drive Show, from 15:00 to 18:00, weekdays.
When asked what motivated this initiative, Ligwalagwala FM’s station manager, Rio Mabunda, said, “The recent developments in the country regarding national pride and social cohesion has necessitated this directive, as a public broadcaster, it’s our key responsibility to encourage such not unless we want to see the country getting fragmented further. This is a start to our efforts of making sure South Africans irrespective of call get to know their anthem by heart and identify with all national symbols.”
