The next episode of The Graham Norton Show, which airs on Tuesday, 9 June at 21:40 on BBC Entertainment, channel 120 on DStv, Norton welcomes Chris Pratt, Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy, Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law, top comic John Bishop and British indie rock band Florence and the Machine.
Pratt, talking about and demonstrating his perfect, if unlikely English accent,
says, “When I was filming Guardians of the Galaxy in the UK we watched a lot of
garbage TV and my wife went crazy for TOWIE [The Only Way is Essex]. She fell in love with the
show and I started picking up the accent so now the only British one I can do
is an Essex one.”
Asked about his new movie, Jurassic World, he says, “I was 13 when the original
film came out and I was swept up in it. I could never at that time
imagined that I could even be an actor let alone an actor who gets to join that
franchise. I was captivated by the idea that it was real. I wasn’t
terrified, I was mesmerised.” And on the new film he says, “It is
legitimately really good, which is such a relief.”
Revealing he got into trouble with NBC while making Parks and Recreation, he
says, “We were shooting a scene where my character turns up naked at my
co-star’s door. I was wearing skin coloured underwear and I wasn’t
getting quite the right reaction I was hoping for. It was late in the day
so I decided to improvise and drop my trousers for the take. Her reaction was
great and it’s the take they used."
“Then I got a letter from NBC’s HR department that said, ‘There is a protocol
about nude scenes. This is not a joke and you are being reprimanded and
you can’t go around telling people about this like some kind of joke.’ I’ve framed the letter.”
Law, talking about a nude bathing scene he had to do while appearing in
Indiscretions on Broadway, recalls one particularly embarrassing night, “I had
some friends in and because of that the crew filled the bath with ice. It
was cruel. Everyone needed binoculars.”
McCarthy, talking about her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and asked if her
parents were at the unveiling, she says, “Shockingly, my dad was not there
because he was de-weeding the lake. I said, ‘I’m not going to get another
one of these you know,’ and he said, ‘I know, but the weeds…’ It was strange
because he is normally embarrassingly supportive.”
Revealing her audition for Bridesmaids didn’t quite go to plan, she says, “I
was reading a scene about me falling off a cruise ship and felt a bit too
comfortable and started improvising. I told an eight-minute story about a
sexual encounter with a dolphin. It went on for a very long time and I
feel I went into some really weird black out. On the way home I
said to myself, ‘Why do you always get weird?’ I was amazed to get the
part.”
Bishop, talking about his new TV show says, “If I never do anything else on telly
again after this, I’ve done the show I’ve always wanted to do. It’s a
dream.”
And, on receiving a Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University, he says,
“Never did I imagine someone would give me an award like that. It was a
lovely moment and I felt like an advert for comprehensive education. I
turned up and there were 700 students receiving doctorates and degrees that
they had worked for it and I had done literally nothing. There was part of me
that felt guilty for a moment.”
Asked why he took a 'selfie' on such an occasion, he says, “I hadn’t prepared a
speech because I thought I would just do a bit of stand up but when I got there
it didn’t seem right so I took a photo instead.”
Florence and the Machine perform Ship to Wreak live in the studio before
joining Norton for a chat about her new album.
And finally, Norton pulls the lever on more foolhardy audience members brave
enough to sit in the Red Chair.
This episode of The Graham Norton Show airs on Tuesday, 9 June at 21:40 on BBC Entertainment, channel 120 on DStv.
