Decode Communications, a strategic reputation management powerhouse, has announced the appointment of public relations luminary Rams Mabote, who now comes "out of retirement" to join the company as executive chairperson.
Having worked with and admired the work of Mabote, Decode CEO and founder Lorato Tshenkeng says that Mabote would play a significant role in taking Decode to new heights in the industry.
Decode is a 12-year-old leading reputation management firm specialising in public affairs, issues and crisis management, corporate communications and digital public relations, according to Tshenkeng.
Mabote, a veteran journalist and renowned communication strategist, brings rich experience in public affairs and crisis communication to Decode, according to the agency.
His career, spanning over 32 years, has been characterised by high-profile roles highlighting his prowess in shaping public perception and managing crises, locally and internationally, with clients in the public and private sectors. Mabote has earned a stellar reputation for his ability to navigate complex media environments and develop impactful communication strategies, the agency says.
On the other hand, says the agency, is Tshenkeng, the founder of Decode. Tshenkeng offers a distinctive background that blends military precision with strategic insight. Formerly an air traffic controller in the South African Air Force, Tshenkeng successfully transitioned into the PR and communication industries.
In 2009, Mail & Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans recognised him as a leading communication strategist. Tshenkeng's background and skills in strategic planning and crisis management make him a formidable force in the strategic communications field, the agency says.
According to Decode, Mabote will be responsible for steering the firm's overall strategic direction and new business development initiatives and leading its newly established public affairs practice.
Currently, Mabote hosts his weekly podcast, Taking The Rams By The Horns, in partnership with Arena Holdings, one of the largest and most reputable media companies in South Africa. He also hosts a weekly TV show, The Entrepreneurial SME, on Business Day TV.
According to the firm, Tshenkeng continues as CEO and will focus on driving the firm's business strategy and operational excellence and lead the social impact practice and digital transformation initiatives.
This partnership not only represents a convergence of unique skills, experiences, expertise and vision but also signals a forward-thinking approach to addressing the evolving demands of public relations and communications in a digital-first world, the agency says.
The duo's combined leadership and strategic insight promise to create a powerful synergy that will elevate the firm's capabilities, expand its reach and deliver exceptional value to clients — positioning Decode for continued success and growth, according to the agency.
"The opportunity to partner with Tshenkeng is incredibly exciting," says Rams Mabote. "His unique background and strategic prowess align perfectly with my own experience. Together, we are committed to advancing Decode and driving innovation within the industry."
Tshenkeng says, "Joining forces with Mabote marks a significant milestone for Decode. He will give further meaning to my long-held belief about public relations: 'It is not about publicity or making brands great at social media. Its only objective should be to have a positive impact on business goals and financials.'"
"I also have confidence that our combined efforts will undoubtedly lead to new opportunities and enhanced capabilities for the firm," adds Tshenkeng.
The agency concludes that as Decode enters this new era, it stands ready to set new standards for a dynamic approach to business challenges driven by innovative public relations strategies.
