Clearwater Mall has announced the Cangro Challenge 2024, an innovative programme that teaches local students how to nurture and grow their own tomato plants — upside down. The initiative has been endorsed by the Department of Education and The Wits Centre for Entrepreneurial Thinking.
This unique hands-on initiative is set to empower 450 young learners to grow food while learning critical lessons about sustainability, recycling and self-reliance, says the mall.
This year, students from Muldersdrift Primary, Spark Randpark Ridge and St Michaels schools will embark on a two-month journey of growth, both literal and metaphorical, guided by the expertise of the Cangro team. Combining practical life skills with environmental education, the challenge is designed to spark curiosity and a passion for sustainable living in future generations, says Clearwater.
Kelly Belman, General Manager of Clearwater Mall, says, "The Cangro Challenge isn't just about growing tomatoes; it's about growing young minds. By showing children how they can make a difference in their environment from a young age, we're planting the seeds of sustainability and self-sufficiency that will benefit them and their communities for years to come."
How the Challenge Works
Clearwater says that the Cangro Challenge officially began in October with a Planting Day at each school, featuring an industrial theatre performance to introduce participants to the project. Armed with their Cangro grow-kits, which include tomato seedlings and repurposed cans, students plant their tomatoes upside down and take on the responsibility of nurturing them over the next two months.
During this time, the students will receive ongoing support from the Cangro team via an interactive online platform, where they can track their progress, access learning materials and participate in mini-competitions to keep the momentum going. The challenge not only integrates the Grade 4 Natural Science curriculum but also encourages family involvement, creating a shared experience that deepens the impact, adds the mall.
Final Showdown and Prizes
According to Clearwater Mall, in January 2025, finalists from each school will compete for the title of Cangro Young Urban Farmer of the Year at Clearwater Mall. The competition will culminate in a celebration of both individual and community achievements, with exciting prizes awarded, including:
- First Place: R5 000 Clearwater Mall gift card
- Second Place: R2 500 Clearwater Mall gift card
- Third Place: R1 000 Clearwater Mall gift card
- Teacher Prize: R2 000 Clearwater Mall gift card, and
- I CAN Prize: R1 000 Clearwater Mall gift card.
Why It Matters
This project offers more than the joy of seeing young learners proudly grow their own food. It also addresses key societal challenges such as food security, health and environmental sustainability. The Cangro Challenge transcends age, culture and language, creating a shared sense of purpose between the participants and the wider community. It is a cost-effective initiative that creates real, lasting connections between local businesses and the people they serve, says the mall.
Belman concludes, "By empowering children with the knowledge and skills to grow their own food, we're giving them more than just a fun project, we're giving them a sense of agency and a brighter, more sustainable future."
