TEARS Animal Rescue has reported that its kennels are currently at capacity as the winter season begins. The organisation is using National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day on Thursday, 30 April to encourage members of the public who are considering pet ownership to explore adoption.
Shelter Capacity and Seasonal Pressures
TEARS is currently caring for a large number of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. According to the organisation, many of these animals were either found as strays or surrendered by previous owners. While they receive care and attention at the shelter, TEARS notes that long-term placement in permanent homes remains a priority, says the shelter.
The organisation also highlights that winter typically brings an increase in demand for animal rescue services. Colder and wetter conditions can contribute to higher numbers of vulnerable animals requiring assistance, particularly in under-resourced areas. Increasing adoption rates ahead of peak winter conditions may help free up space and resources for incoming cases.
Adoption Process and Animal Care
TEARS states that animals made available for adoption are sterilised (where age-appropriate), vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed prior to placement. The organisation also conducts health and behavioural assessments to support suitable matches between pets and adopters, adds the shelter.
Range of Animals Available
A variety of animals are currently available for adoption, including younger and older pets with differing activity levels and care needs. TEARS advises that potential adopters can consult with staff to identify animals that align with their living arrangements and lifestyle.
How to Adopt or Support
Individuals interested in adopting can visit the TEARS shelter in Sunnydale, Cape Town, or view available animals online at tears.org.za. The organisation encourages prospective adopters to ask questions about the process and requirements, says the shelter.
For those unable to adopt, TEARS suggests that sharing information about available animals may help increase awareness and support placement efforts.
Context
National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day serves as a reminder of the number of animals in shelters across South Africa awaiting homes. TEARS indicates that community participation plays an important role in supporting animal welfare initiatives, particularly during periods of increased demand such as winter, concludes the shelter.
