Perfect weather drew cancer survivors, entire families and corporate teams to the 5km walk followed by entertainment.

The Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, which was held in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Health, was the culmination of an awareness campaign run over several months.

Algoa FM and the Eastern Cape Department of Health hosted numerous health and cancer screenings at shopping malls in and around Nelson Mandela Bay.

Free screenings were also done at this year’s registration. They included hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure, glucose levels and breast self-examination.

Proceeds from the walk will benefit Igazi Foundation, which is the only non-governmental organisation in the Eastern Cape specialising in the treatment of blood diseases, including blood cancer.

According to Dr Neil Littleton, the founding member of Igazi, the funds raised through the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer will be used for the ongoing upgrades and improvements to the Aloe Igazi wards at the Provincial Hospital.

“The existing facilities bear testimony to the power of partnerships, where business, civil society and government join forces for the greater good of the people,” adds Dr Littleton.
