Workers' Day has been an international holiday since 1891 and was officially recognised in South Africa after the first democratic elections in 1994.

It celebrates workers' rights and serves as both an appreciation of and a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party and other labour organisations played in the fight against Apartheid.

Social media has enabled workers to connect with one another and share their common concerns, as well as connect with other people who can help when a crisis occurs.

This new way of connecting with the world has given working class individuals the power to shine light into dark corners.
